Fiber Art Inspired by Love, Chaos & the Unseen
Discover a collection of original fiber artworks where fabric, thread, color, and texture come together to create a deeply tactile visual experience. Each piece is built through layers, allowing colors and forms to emerge gradually from beneath the surface. The work explores the relationship between what we see and what lies hidden—inviting the viewer to pause, look closer, and discover something new.
Fiber Art
When chaos and suffering struck my family in 2014, my response was to turn in a state of utter unknowing to the universe and ask how I might learn to love my husband and myself better as we moved forward. The result was a meditative practice of laying my ego aside and going to that place beneath my thoughts, to the place of unknowing, that is the seat of creation. In that state, I layer fibers and fabrics as a mantra and image become known to me.
Initially inspired by Buddhist Prayer flags in the Himalayas hung out to release prayers as they deteriorate in the elements, my flags can be hung tied together or stand alone and be framed. Each is made by layering hundreds of fibers and fabrics to create an effect of colors glowing up from below. Then I lower the feeder feet on my sewing machine and move the piece around to sew in the details. They have frayed edges to symbolize the release of our intentions into the universe without disintegration..
All my art orients the observer to look beneath the surface of the human condition, to find the fierceness of love as well as the tenderness. Focusing on the love, is the ballast that sustains us through the chaos.
Paintings
In my early twenties, an octogenarian nun at a local university tutored me in color. Until then my work had been done primarily in shades of gray. I was afraid of color. Through her tutelage and years of courageous practice, I began painting with acrylics. For years I painted on anything I could find, from walls, to motorcycles, to mannequins and canvas. Eventually I took classes at a community college and then found another teacher in her eighties who is the best colorist I’ve ever met.
My paintings are alive with color now. I revel in the glazing technique, whereby translucent colors are layered, sometimes dozens of colors thick to create a dimensional glowing effect, much like I create in my fiber collages with translucent fabrics. I don’t limit myself to subject matter, but wait for something to strike me as needing to be painted. This tends to create an expressiveness in my paintings that speaks to presence.
